We are pleased to announce the National Library of Medicine's traveling exhibit Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians will be coming to Kansas City. This prestigious exhibit will only be seen in 61 selected public, academic and medical libraries throughout the United States.   The exhibition examines the lives and achievements of women in medicine since they first gained admission to American medical schools 150 years ago. Metro Med has partnered with the University of Missouri ? Kansas City Medical School, the University of Kansas Medical School and the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and we want you, our members to take part.

We ask that you tell your story and upload a photo as part of Metro Med?s an online gallery which will profile area women physicians. Not only will these online profiles be a record of your career in medicine but they will be used in middle and high schools across the area as a career development tool. Just think?you could inspire a young woman to enter the field.

Please take a few moments to tell us your story!

Name:
Deborah A. Baumann, MD
Why did you choose to become a physician?
I grew up in rural northeast Missouri. I always knew that I would be a doctor. I had a fascination with science and most importantly, a desire to help people. As early as 8 years old, I planned to go the medical school.
What's the best thing about being a physician?
As a general pediatrician, I love being with families in the delivery room or shortly thereafter. Following patients and their families during the happy well visits as well as during illness/injury creates a bond that is incredible. It is my hope that all children are healthy, strong, and confident.
What advice would you offer someone considering the field?
If you have a love of science and math and a strong desire to work with people, consider medicine. I would encourage you to study hard and become a community leader. Volunteer at local hospitals, nursing homes, or charities. Work to deepen your ability to communicate well and always foster compassion. Doctoring requires much more than intelligence.
